Caring for Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron: First Use & Maintenance Tips

Pre-seasoned cast iron cookware is a popular choice for many home cooks, offering excellent heat retention and durability. However, it's crucial to understand that even pre-seasoned pans require proper care to maintain their non-stick properties and prevent rusting. This blog post will guide you through the essential steps for first use and ongoing maintenance of your pre-seasoned cast iron cookware.

First Use: Seasoning Your Pre-Seasoned Pan

While your cast iron pan comes pre-seasoned, it's beneficial to season it again before first use:

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Wash your pan with hot water and dry thoroughly.
  3. Apply a thin layer of cooking oil all over the pan, including the outside and handle.
  4. Place the pan upside down in the oven, with a sheet of aluminum foil on the bottom rack to catch any drips.
  5. Bake for 1 hour, then let it cool in the oven.

This process helps reinforce the seasoning and provides extra protection against rust.

Ongoing Maintenance: Preventing Rust

Pre-seasoned pans are more prone to rusting if not properly cared for. Here are some key tips:

  1. Dry Immediately: After washing, dry your pan thoroughly with a clean cloth or paper towel. Never let it air dry.
  2. Heat Dry: For extra assurance, heat the pan on the stove for a few minutes to evaporate any remaining moisture.
  3. Oil After Each Use: Apply a thin layer of oil to the entire pan while it's still warm. Use a paper towel to spread the oil and remove any excess.
  4. Proper Storage: Store your pan in a dry place. If stacking, place a paper towel between pans to absorb any moisture and prevent scratching.
  5. Avoid Prolonged Soaking: Don't let your pan sit in water for extended periods, as this can lead to rust formation.
  6. Use Regularly: Frequent use helps maintain the seasoning and prevents rust.

Remember, if you notice any rust forming, don't panic. Gently scrub the rust off with steel wool, re-season the pan, and continue with proper care.
