What makes Cast Iron Warehouse different?

We work directly with specialist foundries and sell online, which helps us keep prices reasonable without cutting back on materials or construction. Our focus is simple: well-made cast iron cookware designed for everyday cooking and bread baking.

Where are your products made?

Our cookware is responsibly and sustainably manufactured in China by specialist Foundries. We chose partners who meet strict ethical standards and really know how to handle iron. The result is high-performance cookware that rivals the expensive French brands, at a fraction of the price.

Is it safe?

Yes. Our cookware is tested for food-contact safety, including lead and cadmium. The enamel cooking surface does not use PTFE or PFOA and is non-reactive when used as intended.

Care & Maintenance

Can I use metal utensils?

We recommend using wood or silicone utensils. Metal utensils can leave marks or scratches on the enamel, especially with repeated scraping or cutting.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

It is dishwasher safe, but we recommend hand washing with warm, soapy water. Repeated dishwasher use may gradually dull the enamel finish.

Is it oven safe?

Our cookware is oven safe up to 500°F (260°C), including the metal knob. Always follow the care instructions for your specific product.

What is "Thermal Shock" and how do I avoid it?

Thermal shock happens when cookware is exposed to a sudden temperature change, such as placing a hot pot in cold water. Let the cookware cool naturally on a heat-safe surface before washing, and never add cold water to a very hot pot.

How do I clean stubborn stains or burnt-on food?

Let the cookware cool before cleaning. Add enough water to cover the residue, stir in one or two tablespoons of baking soda, and simmer gently for about 10 minutes. Let it cool again, then loosen the residue with a soft sponge or wooden utensil. Avoid steel wool and harsh scouring pads, as they can scratch the enamel.

Enameled Cast Iron Cookware

The inside is black and feels rough. Is this raw iron?

No. The black interior is matte enamel, not raw cast iron. It may feel slightly textured, but it is fully coated and does not need to be seasoned or kept oiled. Wash it with warm, soapy water before first use, and it is ready to cook with.

What is enameled cast iron?

Enameled cast iron is traditional cast iron covered in a glass-like enamel coating that is fused on at very high heat. Unlike bare cast iron, the enamel surface is non-reactive, so it will not interact with acidic foods, and it does not need to be seasoned or kept oiled to prevent rust.

Is enameled cast iron safe and non-toxic?

The enamel surface is glass-based, non-reactive and made without PTFE or PFOA. It is suitable for everyday cooking, including acidic foods such as tomato-based sauces, as long as the enamel is not badly chipped or cracked.

Is the knob safe for 500°F (260°C)?

Yes. Our knobs are made from solid metal and are oven safe up to 500°F (260°C). There is no need to remove the knob before baking.

Will preheating the empty pot ruin the enamel?

Avoid heating empty enameled cookware over a stovetop burner. For bread baking, place the cold cookware in a cold oven and let them preheat together. This provides more even heating and reduces the risk of thermal shock.

Is your cookware compatible with induction cooktops?

Yes. Our cast iron cookware works on induction, gas, electric, and ceramic glass cooktops. Start with low to medium heat, and always lift the cookware rather than sliding it across a glass surface.

Sourdough & Baking

Why did my sourdough turn out flat and dense?

A flat or dense loaf can have several causes, including a starter that was not active enough, under-proofing, over-proofing, or dough that spread during shaping. Make sure your starter is rising reliably before mixing the dough, and use the dough’s appearance and feel, not just the clock to judge fermentation.

What size Dutch Oven do I need?

For a typical loaf made with around 500g of flour, a 5- to 6-quart Dutch oven is a good starting point. A much smaller pot may restrict the rise, while a very large pot can give the dough more room to spread. Round pots suit boules, while oval pots are better suited to batards.

When do I take the lid off?

A common starting point is to bake with the lid on for about 20 minutes, then remove it for the remaining 20–25 minutes. The covered stage traps steam and supports oven spring, while the uncovered stage develops the crust. Adjust the timing to suit your recipe and preferred crust colour.

Why is my bread gummy inside?

Cutting the loaf while it is still hot is one common cause, as the crumb has not finished setting. Let it cool fully on a wire rack, usually for at least 1–2 hours. A gummy crumb can also come from underbaking or fermentation issues.

Can I do the "Cold Start" baking method?

Yes, but the results depend on the bread and recipe. Preheating usually gives sourdough a more predictable rise and crust. Cold-start baking can work well for some yeasted loaves, as the dough continues to rise while the oven heats.

What is the max dough weight I can fit?

Dough capacity varies by product and size. Check the product page for the recommended flour or total dough weight for your specific bread oven. Leaving enough headroom helps prevent the dough from touching the lid as it rises.

Do I need to spray water inside for steam?

No. The heavy lid traps moisture released by the dough during baking, creating enough steam to support oven spring and crust development.

Can I bake sandwich bread in this? [Loaf Pan]

Yes. The loaf pan can be used for sourdough, yeasted sandwich bread, meatloaf, banana bread and other quick breads. For recipes that are not baked on parchment, lightly grease the pan with butter or cooking oil. Check the product dimensions to choose the right size for your recipe.

Can I throw ice cubes in for extra steam?

We do not recommend adding ice cubes to hot enameled cookware. The sudden temperature change may damage the enamel. The fitted lid already traps moisture from the dough, so additional steam is usually not needed.

Why is my dough sticking?

High-hydration dough can stick to almost any cooking surface. Parchment paper makes the dough easier to load and remove and helps protect the enamel from baked-on residue.

Why buy a "Bread Oven" instead of a normal pot?

A dedicated bread oven usually has a lower base, giving you easier access when loading and scoring the dough. The fitted lid traps steam like a Dutch oven, while the shape gives the loaf more room to rise without having to reach into a deep, preheated pot.

Why is the bottom of my sourdough burning?

The heavy cast iron base holds a lot of heat, which can make the bottom crust darker in some ovens. Try moving the bread oven to a higher rack or placing a heavy baking sheet on the rack directly below it to act as a heat shield. You may also need to adjust the baking temperature slightly to suit your oven.

Do I need to use parchment paper?

It is not required, but we recommend it for wet or high-hydration dough. Parchment makes the dough easier to lower into a hot bread oven and lift out after baking, while also helping to prevent sticking.

Do I need to score my sourdough before baking?

We recommend scoring most sourdough loaves before baking. The cut gives the dough a controlled place to expand as it rises in the oven. Without it, the loaf may split along the side or bottom instead.

Use a sharp blade and make one clean, confident cut. Chilled dough is usually firmer and easier to score.
