Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron
Cast iron is all we do at Cast Iron Warehouse. We love how well it holds heat and how long it lasts.
This piece comes pre-seasoned with vegetable oil, not enamel or a synthetic nonstick coating. It's ready to cook with after a quick wash and dry. The seasoning gets better with regular use and proper care.
Use & Care
Use & Care
Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron
The Potjie arrives pre-seasoned and ready for use. Before your first cook, wash it with warm water, dry thoroughly and apply a light coat of cooking oil.
Cook Over Coals or Open Fire
Designed for outdoor cooking over coals and open fire. Build heat gradually rather than placing a cold pot over an extremely hot fire.
Wash & Dry Thoroughly
Hand wash with warm water and a soft brush or sponge. Avoid the dishwasher. Dry immediately and completely after washing to help prevent rust.
Lightly Oil After Use
Once dry, wipe a thin layer of cooking oil over the inside of the pot before storing. This helps maintain the seasoning and protect the cast iron from moisture.
Use Care Around Heat
The pot, lid, legs and handle can become very hot during cooking. Always use dry oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves when handling.
Store in a Dry Place
Make sure the Potjie is completely dry before storing. Leaving the lid slightly open can help air circulate and prevent moisture from becoming trapped inside.
How we keep our prices fair
How we keep our prices fair
Cookware sold through traditional retail channels can pass through several layers before reaching the customer, including distributors, wholesalers and retailers. Each layer adds its own costs and margin.
We keep our supply chain simpler. We work directly with experienced cast iron manufacturers and sell directly to our customers, without traditional wholesale and retail markups.
By keeping those layers to a minimum, we can offer well-made cast iron cookware without traditional retail mark-ups.

Why You'll Love It
-
More Than a Halloween Decoration
This is a real cast iron cauldron, not a lightweight decorative prop. Use it for cooking, serving hearty meals or holding treats at a Halloween gathering.
-
Three Legs for Cooking Over Coals
The raised legs keep the pot above the coals, allowing you to cook directly over a campfire without a separate stand when placed on a stable surface.
-
Made for Slow-Cooked Meals
The deep, rounded shape is ideal for chili, stews, beans and traditional potjiekos. Heavy cast iron holds steady heat, while the fitted lid helps keep moisture in during longer cooks.

I've been wanting a cauldron for ages, but kept talking myself out of buying one purely for aesthetic reasons. As much as I wanted a cauldron sitting around my kitchen, I knew most of the decorative ones would be useful for little more than holding popcorn. And then I stumbled across this CAST IRON beauty. It's a real, functional cauldron that works perfectly well on my gas range. My teenager has already been making spiced cider in it, and I'm looking forward to making basically every one of my fall and winter favorites--Brunswick stew, chili, hot cocoa, broccoli cheddar soup, more cider...all the things I could make in a boring old stockpot, except now I get to make them in a CAULDRON.It's an 8-quart #3 cauldron, by the bye, so Hermione would be proud. It's large enough for actual family-sized batches of food, and the legs mean it can also stand over a campfire, so you KNOW this thing is going camping with us.It's exactly what I wanted: all the witchy aesthetic joy of having a cauldron in my kitchen, except it's actually useful cookware instead of a Halloween prop.Hearth witch approved!
I have gotten "cast iron" things before and was disappointed with aluminum. This cauldron however is SUPER heavy and most definitely cast iron!! It is well made and it looks fantastic! The handle on it is sturdy, i dont know the material, but i carried this from room to room and the handle didnt bend or give way to the cast iron. This is a fantastic purchase! I am so excited!
Super sturdy, solid cast-iron (with the exception of the handle). It's heavy-duty and durable. The lid fits on it perfectly, and the handle allows for easy lifting of the entire cauldron. It is as heavy as expected for a cast-iron and still easy to lift and carry. am excited to use this for many reasons beyond Halloween too! For the immediate future (Halloween of course), I'm using it as a decoration next to my front door, filled with candy and other treats to hand out on Halloween night. After the holiday, I am excited to use it on our firepit to make campfire stew. It's a great size as a candy/treat bowl and as a pot of stew. The pre-seasoning has held up well in the humid weather (indoors), and rust has not been an issue in any way. The value for the cast-iron cauldron is great, even if using it for a long-lasting decoration (not a disposable, plastic tub), but also for the versatility of actually stewing food over a hot fire.
excitement only a SAFFA can feel lol
Heavy, well-cast, no obvious flaws. Looks great as Halloween decor and works well as a serving dish. Good size at 6 qt. Will probably take this camping since the long legs should work awesome with campfires. Plus my gf absolutely cackled when I showed it to her so bonus points there.
Frequently asked questions
What Is a Potjie, and How Is It Different from a Dutch Oven?
A Potjie is a traditional three-legged cast iron pot designed to stand over coals. Unlike a flat-bottom Dutch oven, it has a rounded body and raised legs for outdoor fire cooking, and is particularly associated with long, slow, layered potjiekos.
Which Size Potjie Should I Choose?
Choose the size based on how much food you normally cook rather than the traditional size number alone. The 6 qt is the most manageable option for smaller groups, while the 8 qt and 10 qt give you more room for family or group meals; choose the 14 qt when you regularly cook larger batches for gatherings.
What Do Size #2, #3, #4 and #6 Mean?
Potjie size numbers are traditional size references, not the capacity in quarts. They can also vary between manufacturers, so the most reliable way to choose is by the listed capacity and dimensions: our models are 6 qt (#2), 8 qt (#3), 10 qt (#4) and 14 qt (#6).
Do I Need to Season the Potjie Before First Use?
No full seasoning process is required before your first cook. The Potjie arrives pre-seasoned with vegetable oil. Wash and dry it before use, then wipe on a light layer of cooking oil; after cooking, keep it dry and lightly oiled to maintain the seasoning.
How Much Heat Should I Use When Cooking a Potjie?
Potjiekos is normally cooked over a small, controlled bed of hot coals rather than intense flames. Aim for a gentle simmer and add coals gradually when more heat is needed; too much heat underneath the rounded base can scorch food at the bottom. Experienced potjie cooks repeatedly emphasise gentle heat rather than a large fire.
Should I Stir a Potjie While It Cooks?
Traditional potjiekos is usually built in layers and left largely unstirred while it cooks, so the ingredients keep their shape rather than becoming a conventional stirred stew. If you're using the pot for chilli, beans or another recipe rather than traditional potjiekos, follow the stirring method that recipe requires.
Can I Cook Directly Over an Open Fire?
Yes. The Potjie is made for outdoor cooking over coals and open fire. For long, slow cooking, use controlled coals underneath the pot rather than keeping it over strong flames for the entire cook.
Can I Use the Potjie on a Stovetop?
This model is designed for outdoor fire cooking rather than a standard stovetop. Its rounded bottom and three raised legs are made to stand over coals; if you want the cauldron shape for gas or induction cooking, a flat-bottom cast iron cauldron is the more practical choice.
How Heavy Is the Potjie?
These are substantial cast iron pots. The 6 qt weighs about 12.8 lb, the 8 qt about 17.2 lb, the 10 qt about 24.2 lb, and the 14 qt about 37.4 lb. Remember that the pot will be considerably heavier once filled, especially with the larger sizes.
